Chapter Fifteen
And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?
Luke 24:38
The next few days were but a blur to Rose. Though Theo insisted she stay in his solar while he slept in the stable, Rose returned to the chamber in the tower the next day. The tiny sanctuary gave her solace, for she could not look upon the people of Taine without guilt and grief. The money they would have made from the sale of grain, cheese, and other goods would have helped them through the winter to buy more and better supplies and food. Now, they would have to rely on their own goods and hope it would be enough.
On top of all this, she had heard from Agatha that Lord Iron and Lord de Baston had passed on offering coin for Theoâs invention. With no new offers, the project seemed to be doomed. Already, peasants claimed that Theo was preparing to leave in the spring and had already informed Sir Hugh and Lady Eleanor. Nonetheless, whatever the outcome of Taine Manor, she would be stuck here until spring too.
With a heavy sigh, she rose from her pallet where she lay almost every afternoon after her morning lessons with Theo. No rest would come, so she headed toward the goat pen. She wondered who was taking care of the animals since Daniel now lived at Sir Hughâs keep. Saint Philip started bleating the moment she entered the pen. He kept nudging her hand, looking for a treat.
âI have nothing for you,â she said, scratching his neck. With a quick look around, she noticed the trough was empty and Saint Paul was gnawing on one of the fence posts. The water trough was almost bone dry. âThis will not do,â she said to Saint Philip. âWe cannot have the disciples eating their home and dying of thirst.â
Rose picked up a bucket and made her way over to the courtyard well; after she returned, she poured the water into the trough. Then she headed to the stables and picked up a bale of hay and used the pitchfork to fill the trough. The goats took to the water and hay like a pack of demons, heads bumping and pushing against their fellow goat brothers.
âWhat is this? Have you not heard to do unto others as you would have them do to you?â The goats continued to ignore her and shoved their way closer to the trough. Rose shook her head and laughed before walking into the shed.
There she found Jude, the old man, sitting on his stool with a staff in his lap. âGood afternoon, Lady Rose.â
She folded her arms across her chest. âI would say the same to you, but I do not offer a greeting to a man who would let his charges starve.â
The skin around his fathomless eyes crinkled when he lifted his lips. âBut they are not starving. You have fed them.â
âAye, but it is not my task but yours.
